戦国大名・毛利家が治めた広大な領土と着々と力を蓄える外様大名
四国・中国地方最大の都市は広島市。牡蠣の養殖が盛んなことで有名ですね。
中国山地と瀬戸内海と四国山地を境に、気候がそれぞれ違っていたり、知れば知るほど面白い地域です。
四国・中国地方では岡山藩、長州藩、土佐藩、伊予松山藩など40藩あります。
この中でも注目すべきは、外様大藩・岡山藩と幕末・明治維新の中心であった長州藩です。
毛利家が大半を領していた中国地方。
関ヶ原の戦いで敗れた毛利家は所領を防長2国(長州藩)まで減らされてしまいます。
112万石→29万8千石に減封され(のちに36万9千石)あまりの財政難に、藩主の毛利輝元は幕府に対して所領の投げ出しさえ申し出たとか。。。
毛利家が拠点としていた広島城には、尾張から福島正則が入ったものの、幕府の制定した武家諸法度に違反したことで転封されてしまいます。
その後、紀州藩から浅野長晟が入ると、海運を用いて藩を発展させました。
逆玉の輿？嫁のおかげで高待遇の池田家
岡山藩は後継がいないまま小早川秀秋が亡くなってしまい、池田輝政の子が入ります。
その後一貫して岡山藩は池田家が治めることに。
輝政は家康の娘・督姫と結婚。
その権力は強く、池田氏一門は鳥取藩や鹿野藩のほか岡山、鳥取藩の各支藩の藩主となっています。
御三家の入部で権力アップの高松藩
四国の高松藩は西国監視の命を受けて松平頼重が12万石で入りました。頼重は御三家の水戸徳川家初代藩主・徳川頼房の長男にあたります。
高松松平家は、彦根藩井伊家・会津松平家とともに江戸城の伺候席を溜詰とする高い格式をもつ名家です。
長州藩をはじめ、土佐藩や徳島藩など安定した藩政を保った外様藩が多かったものの、水面下では明治維新に向けて着実に準備を進めていたのでした。
